As far as I know the worms are always alive. Their exoskeleton causes them to become pretzel-like when dry, and their guts turn black, which I assume would cause them to be less desirable for eating. I've never seen a lizard or a ferret choose to eat a dead mealworm. Really, the easiest AND best solution for me has always been to crush their heads between my thumb and index finger. A (more) humane death for the mealworm, it wiggles for a time afterward, and removes the danger of it trying to eat its' way out of the stomach of whatever swallows it.
