Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Incomplete spay & reaction to vaccine
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
Bethany,
i have not had experience with an incomplete spay, vaccine reactions
are common. our vet does shots with a benadryl and still asks us to
wait about 30 minutes after the shots to ensure there is no reaction.
i personally haven't had ferrets who have distemper reactions, but
my best friend's ferrets have. First was her Lucy, who was two at
the time, and had had distemper shots before. Even though she
waited, she, like you, got halfway home when Lucy began coughing and
throwing up. She was closer to another vet clinic at that point, so
she stopped by and got brief supportive care for Lucy there, who
recovered quickly. Our regular vet does not recommend that Lucy get
distemper shots anymore due to her previous reaction.
Her other experience was with Diesel, a three year old male ferret
who also had had distemper shots in the past. She decided to try a
new vet nearer to her house who "specialized in pocket pets".
Unfortunately, this vet did not pre-treat with benadryl, and gave
Diesel both rabies and distemper shots. Within minutes Diesel had
turned red, thrown up and went unconscious. They felt it was due to
the distemper shot, which was administered at his neck. The rabies
was given in the hind end, and all his symptoms occured near the
face. The vet whisked Diesel away for immediate care, but he died
within 2 hours under the vets care.
These were two very sad lessons for us to learn - wait, wait, wait,
after any type of vaccination for your ferret, and always go to a
vet you can trust and question should you feel they are not handling
your ferret's care properly.
so while it does seem your ferret had a mild reaction to the
vaccine, you may want to talk to your vet about future
vaccinations. i hope he makes a speedy recovery, and hope things
work out for your little girl, too!
