Subject: [ferrethealth] Special prayers needed for Audrey
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
If any of you have pet rats along with your ferrets you know how
precious they are. Today I took my hairless female Audrey for a small
tumor removal to the vet. Unfortunately the laser he used malfunctioned
and a fire ball errupted, burning Audrey's ears, whiskers, and eyes
which are swollen shut. He is not sure if the oxygen mask played a part
in the fire ball, but he feels bad. I am just sick over it.
She is eating and drinking, and he gave me skin, eye & pain meds to
give her. I love my ratties as much as my ferret girls.
Please keep her in your prayers, she needs many of them.
If your vet uses lasers for your ferrets please talk with him about
their use and if it is necessary.
Thanks,
Raina Cape Coral, Fl
ps Ingrid and Stacy say hello to all their ferret cousins.
[Moderator's Note:
Hoping for the best for Audrey. I allowed this post even though it is not a ferret post because it is important that more be learned about this incident and exactly what happened with the equipment.
I asked my husband whose doctorate is in physics and who is very experienced with laser research, and he said that any surgical laser itself would get that hot (even with a malfunction). On the other hand, the power supply could malfunction and he has encountered that; however that would not be likely to be anywhere near a mask. He wonders if the wiring was bad and created a spark. If there was enough oxygen in the gas the ferret was being given at the time that could create this sort of scenario. That could be a manufacturing or upkeep problem with the laser but medical lasers are supposed to be very robust so this really needs to be followed up on in case it is a defect in others. If so, this is a serious problem needing medical recall. --SDC]
