To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

This happen to my ferret last year, it's a terrifying experience. I researched about the distemper shot before getting it again this year. I asked my vet what type (brand) shot he had given him that caused the reaction. It was the most popular and safe distemper shot posted on the Internet (purevax). This year we gave the ferret Galaxy D, and he did not have a reaction.

One brand does not guarantee the results of every ferret and reaction. Next time, just stay in the vets office close to an hour. Even if they say it's ok to go home in 15-20 mins. It doesn't hurt to stay longer. Find out which distemper shot he gave the ferret and try a different one. I did read on some Internet postings that giving the benedryl with the shot can delay the reaction. There are pros and cons to that as well.

All in all, it's best to be sure that the vet you are using does have a decent amount of experience with ferrets. Ask him questions. If you don't feel secure with the answers, find an experienced ferret vet. Even if you have to travel further..
