also why if the funding could be arranged it would be great to have studies
to know how
long specific vaccines are good for beyond a year in ferrets (as opposed to
in other
species) so that they could be given less often.
**This seems an opportune cue to post that, in cooperation with the American
Ferret Association, I am beginning to collect data on canine distemper titers
following vaccination in order to establish how long elevated titers persist
in ferrets. Hopefully we will be able to prove that titers persist for lengthy
periods of time. Preliminary data suggests persistence for at least three
years so far, but much more data is needed to be statistically meaningful. If
you or your vet is interested in participating in this, the *vet* needs to
contact me with an address to which study forms can be sent, along with an
explanation of the study procedure and needed data for each individual.
Requests for forms can be emailed to me at this address (ferrethealer at
aol.com) or mailed to my hospital at:
Ruth L. Heller, DVM
Borderbrook Animal Hospital
3741 William Penn Highway
Murrysville, PA 15668
Donations to help support the study can be sent to the AFA earmarked for the
Mongo Memorial Canine Distemper Virus Titer Study. Mongo was a gorgeous big
beautiful sable male of mine that I lost to an acute respiratory collapse
following his distemper vaccine - he was in respiratory arrest within thirty
seconds of getting the vaccine, with no prior history of reaction and having been
pretreated with Benadryl. My goal and hope for this study is to establish
durations of immunity that will minimize the chance of that happening to any other
ferret in the future.
Dr. Ruth
