If they are not in the process of recovering from a systemic illness that can inflame the
gums, for example, influenza, then get them in for a vet check. As with humans, bleeding
gums can mean that there is gum disease or that the plaque is at a point which needs
professional attentions, or there could be debris caught beneath a gum, or some other
problem.

Also, in case you are brushing wrong, bring along the dental supplies you use because it
may be that a training session with a vet tech would solve the problem.

If the gums are swollen, red, retracting, etc. or the teeth have deposits near the gums, or
teeth are loose, etc. it is time for a vet check. Dental health is medical health, too.

Tip: most but not all of our ferrets like a treat product which helps clean teeth and
massage gums: Cheweasels or Foamy Fries (both of which are fully digestible and made of
protein gelatin so the worst they will do is cause diarrhea if eaten in too large amounts).
You may want to those and other tooth cleaning things in the future, too, depending on
what you treating vet advises for the individual.
