Nicole,

I'm not a vet. I would consider two things besides what you've already
done: heart disease or juvenile lymphoma.

Heart disease would be unusual in a ferret this young, but not impossible if
there is some sort of congenital defect. It could account for the earlier
wheezing and the extreme lethargy. An ultrasound of the heart/chest would
be very useful, although you might be able to spot something like general
enlargement on a regular x-ray.

Juvenile lymphoma typically occurs in ferrets 2 yrs or younger. Usually it
is extrememly aggressive, so if Key Largo has been having trouble for more
than a few weeks, this seems a little bit less likely. It can present as a
mass (from the thymus) inside the chest, and since the mass grows rapidly
and is closed in by the rib cage, the lungs can be compressed, leading to
wheezing. An x-ray would show such a mass.

Let me stress that I'm not a vet, these are just two possibilities, and I'm
sure there are other things this could be. I don't like these two
possibilities, because they are both very serious, so I certainly hope it is
neither of these two!

Please keep us posted, and best wishes,

-Pam S.
