Subject: Re: [ferrethealth] bladder infection
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
I would get another urine culture and sensitivity to see if same organism and if any resistance to the antibiotics. It is possible these infections are due to the prostate infection, due to underlying adrenal gland disease. If the infection is in the prostate, at least 3 weeks of antioiotic is needed as well as addressing the underlying adrenal problems.
Just some thoughts, recurring, or hard to treat urinary tract infection is suspicious
in males and underlying causes should be looked into.
Hope that helps some,

Several months ago my old guy Lester started with lethargy and not eating. Shortly after, I noticed that he was leaking urine and had pus around his penis. I took him to the vet, who is learning ferrets with me, and on examination he expressed the most impressive lime green pus out of his bladder that I have ever seen.
We started him on Baytril that was the drug of choice from the culture that was sent. It showed that he had ecoli in his urine.
We can't seem to shake this infection. He has been on Baytril 4 times. The last time he was supposed to be on it for 3 weeks. However after 2 weeks he stopped eating and started to loose weight. I figured that the baytril was bothering his stomach so I stopped the baytril and started carafate and pepcid ( thank you FHL) and he started to get better and then started exhibiting signs of his baldder infection again.
I now have him back on baytril and he has started to eat again. What else should I be doing? Would a daily dose of an antibiotic be in order?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
