Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Lupron Effects on Insulinoma Ferrets ??
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Reading this just made my heart drop!
I rescued my first ferret Indy from a lady who didn't for him
medically. I had found out that he had Adrenal Disease and after
melatonin didn't seem to work we had put him on Lupron, a week or
two later we found him in his cage foamy mouthed and all twisted up,
we rushed him to the emergency vet and the vet revived him and had
told us that he had hypoglycemic shock and that he had insulinoma.
We watched his diet and he was on a steady dose of prednisone for a
while and then again, after another Lupron shot he crashed.
Unfortunately it was during the day and we do not know how long he
was in shock. We had given him corn syrup to raise his blood sugar
and rushed him to the vet. The vet had revived him, but
unfortunately there was too much brain damage from the shock and he
had lost his equilibrium. We had to put him to sleep and it was so
upsetting because when I said good-bye his eyes were so full of life
when he looked up at me. After reading the connection between Lupron
and inslinoma, it makes so much more sense, if I had only known
earlier I probably could of prevented it.

To any one who reads this, I think it would be a good idea to have a
blood sugar test for inslinoma before placing your ferret on Lupron!
Especially if you ferret is older and you do not know the previous
health problems of your ferret.
