Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Lupron Effects on Insulinoma Ferrets ??
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Nicole, from two experiences of ours I want
to propose two alternative possibilities.

We have had lymphoma in a ferret's pancreas
and also have had carcinoma in a ferret's pancreas.

Each of these appeared without warning and
each one almost killed the ferrets when they
suddenly appeared. Both ferrets required
artificial respiration and emergency care, and
when I was doing the artificial respiration before
leaving home with Ashling (who had the carcinoma)
we also had her in heated water because her body
temp was dropping rapidly. Both needed further
Artificial Respiration (done mouth over muzzle with
very gentle cheek puffs) because both also stopped
breathing again on the way to the emergency care.
Each was an incredibly hard save and we only got lucky.

Fritter (lymphoma in pancreas instead of standard
insulinoma) had another 9 months in her with care,
and Ashling has another 3 months because carcinoma
in the pancreas is really, really bad, worse than
lymphoma there and worse than standard insulinoma.
Their daily care was trickier than with insulinoma.

I think that your suggestion is an EXCELLENT one, but I
also think that it would pay to consider that your ferret,
given the sudden and fatal presentation, may have instead
had one of these turn on. In that case, there was pretty
much nothing from your description which could have been
done differently.
