Not all areas are lucky enough to have very little canine distemper.

The rate of reactions to the rabies vaccine has been very low, though reactions can
happen.

What also can happen when ferrets are unvaccinated is that the ferrets could wind up
destroyed. One case before the changes to the compendium comes to mind. There was a
cage of unvaccinated kits in a pet store and a kid who was poking at them was either
bitten or scratched. The kit which had done that could not be identified and the mother
successfully demanded of the state in which the incident occurred that all be destroyed
and tested. They were fine, of course, but that didn't save them. All of the kits died.

States use the _Compendium of Animal Rabies Control and Prevention_ as a guideline BUT
some states have stricter rules in terms of how long vaccinated ferrets are quarantined
and the conditions of quarantine. The states also vary with how they react to unvaccinated
animals and in that case the strictness is greatly magnified. In some states quarantine for
unvaccinated ferrets is out of the question whereas in other there are ways to have a
longer quarantine with veterinary supervision is a hospital agrees, and those are only two
of the variations that exist among states. DO check to find out what your state would do if
a potential adopter is bitten by by an unvaccinated ferret at your shelter, and what would
occur if it could not be determined which individual ferret was involved.

It is always essential to know the particulars of your own state's rabies laws because they
are not universal. (A point I tried to make earlier.)
