Hello Lauren,
Just got off the phone with Hannke Moorma-Roest DVM, Netherlands top ferret vet. since I knew from her that bladder infections are extremely rare in ferrets, I told her about Lester's problem.
Diagnosis: She says with 100% certainty that your boy, Lester, does NOT have a bladder infection. He has a prostate problem secondary to adrenal disease. This is more commen in older, male ferrets.
Treatment:
Prostrate: treat with antibiotic. Baytril is good she said, but ferrets dont like the taste. Is Waltham "Royal Canine Feline Convalescence Support Instant Diet" available in the US? It comes in sachets and is powdered. If you can get this in the US ... I will glady translate Hannke's instructions for use with a ferret, as the instructions on the box/sachet are for cats and dogs.
Adrenal disease:
Treat the adrenal disease with Lupron injections or surgery. Hanneke Moorman says Lupron is preferred, as your boy is old. Surgery is very risky wth older ferrets. If the adrenal disease is not treated, the prostate problem will remain.
Believe me hannke Moorman never says 100% certain unless she truly is and she gave me permission to email you. Please let me know if I can be of any help. Good luck with Lester.
at least now you can treat since you know what the underlying cause is.
best reagrds,
Diane

Several months ago my old guy Lester started with lethargy and not eating. Shortly after, I noticed that he was leaking urine and had pus around his penis. I took him to the vet, who is learning ferrets with me, and on examination he expressed the most impressive lime green pus out of his bladder that I have ever seen.
We started him on Baytril that was the drug of choice from the culture that was sent. It showed that he had ecoli in his urine.
We can't seem to shake this infection...
