Excellent point. When we run into rat tail we do check for possible adrenal disease. In fact,
we have one highly unusual male, Hilbert, now who looks adrenal (fur lost over the sacrum
and tail) but once again is not. In his case he is prone to very bad skin reactions to some
foods and twice even had secondary bacterial dermatitis because of that so he has areas with
bad follicle damage. Because he can be so puzzling he is watched closely and part of his
regular testing includes more thorough adrenal checks that are not usually done as just a
normal part of life. He's a tender soul, anyway, and one with some urinary tract genetic
problems (past diverticulum, cystine stones) which have almost killed him in the past, and if
he uses up some extra money in things like Lupron shots and TN Panels, well, he's worth it.
Personally, we have had some ferrets who lost only tail fur who never developed adrenal
growths, but others who did.
