Subject: [ferrethealth] Lymph node biopsy, enlarged spleen, antibiotics...help!
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
Hello everyone,
I apologize in advance for the lengthy message.
I previously posted about my Summer's "mystery lump". It's, indeed, an
enlarged spleen.
All of the kids have gastrointestinal problems going on. They were on
amoxicillin/metronidazole/Pepto for 3 weeks in early January for the
same thing but it came back, probably because (and we now know)
helicobacter infections take up to 6 weeks on medication before
they're licked.
Currently they've been on amoxi/metro/Pepto for 15 days. Summer's
spleen is still enlarged, her activity level has decreased, and it's
hard for her to get comfortable. She still has a wonderful appetite
and has gained some weight to boot.
Yesterday she saw Dr. X for the first time, and I'm very glad we
finally have a ferret person to go to. (Sukie: thank you so much for
the recommendation. And Dr. X says hello.) She advised us to
continue on the antibiotics and see if Summer's spleen shrinks back to
normal after treatment is finished, but also added we may want to
biopsy a lymph node, because Summer's neck is chubbier then usual, in
case of lymphoma.
Right, so I just wanted to hear opinions on the situation at hand.
Summer is about 7 years old, but very hardy. Are there risks involved
with a biopsy? Would it be too much stress on Summer to be worth it?
Should we wait and see with the medications before getting a biopsy
done? Or could those few weeks be vital if it is lymphoma? Could the
spleen be due to a different type of infection that does not respond
to amoxicillin/metronidazole?
Any information helps, we just want our little girl to be happy again.
Thank you!
~Emily and the kids (Phoebe, Summer, Bailey, Lily, and Linus).
