Subject: [ferrethealth] chemo
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Hi there.
Been very busy at the clinic and just now getting a chance to read through emails. First, I am so sorry to hear about Codo's passing.
I see quite a few ferrets and recently I have been seeing more and more older ferrets with cancer of one form or another. I have had very good response to the chemo protocols that I am working with. These protocols came from NCSU-VMTH oncology department (they refer to me as the ferret oncology vet). I have been very blessed that they are willing to help me to put together protocols that really do work and do not cause my patients undo stress or sickness to receive their treatments. I have multiple lymphoma patients that are months into treatment and doing fantastic (to the point that their owners have stated that these 7 and 8 year olds are acting like their other 2 and 3 year old ferrets). I do feel that each patient's response is different just as in humans and of course each drug will have a different effect on the patient. Therefore, unless my patient is very sick we always try to do chemo because I feel that what I experience is a positive outcome for my little
weasel friends.
