Subject: [ferrethealth] Cryptococcus in Ferrets.
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

I had a beautiful male ferret that was 11 mths old. He started loosing
weight and developed a prolaspe. X-rays were done and a BArium study
done for a odstruction but both came back negative. We tried different
medications but nothing helped. Lucky continued straining and started
showing fresh blood in his poopies. We started treating for IBD but he
continued to get worse. Then one night he had a prolaspe the size of a
golf ball which for a little ferret is quite large. It was very
upsetting and he was in pain. I rushed him to the vets in the middle of
the night. They tried to put the prolaspe back in but Lucky started
bleeding heavy. I begged to have him put down to ease his pain. I
requested a Necropsy which showed a dime size growth in his colin way up
in the pelvic cavity. Further review of all his x-rays still did not
show this growth. The vet sent tissue away to be studied and the report
came back "Yeast organism - Colonic Cryptococcus" I was told this is
very rare with only 1 or 2 cases in the US. What the heck. Does anyone
out there know how he got this, I do not let him in the grass or dirt,
can it be transmitted to our other ferrets or dog, HELP, I need info!!!!
