The people at Snopes are reporting in

that the problem began after going to a new wheat gluten supplier to
Menu Foods and that the recall is estimated to cost Menu Foods
between $26 to $34 million.
Bloomberg says that tests have still not uncovered what the origin of
the problem is - which is vaguely reminiscent of the unexplained
acute kidney failure cases involving raisins and grapes which still
have unknown cause but could be an entirely different phenomenon.

brands and retailers' own names will cost C$30 million ($25.5
million) to C$40 million, the Streetsville, Ontario-based company
said last week. Nine cats and one dog died in connection with Menu
Foods' products made at the company's Emporia, Kansas, plant, the
U.S. Food and Drug Administration reported March 17.
Menu Foods said complaints surrounding the renal health of pets
eating the food coincided with the use a new ingredient, which has

had been completed then) and that format is probably why it is NOT
possible to link directly to these sheets. You MUST go through the
website and click on them. It is an inconvenient way for them to
display the info, but that was their choice.
