Here we go, this mentions the NON-worrisome type that I hope is what the vet
encountered in your ferret:

In section 3.1:

BEGIN QUOTE

Ferrets may become very excited during a routine examination. An erratic heart rate will
often be detected in this excited state. This is considered a normal finding and classified
as a pronounced sinus arrhythmia.

END QUOTE

but it is really important to establish that another type is not there.

You might want to get a cheap stethoscope and do fake vet examinations at home to get
the ferret used to the experience, or if you live near the hospital and it is okay with them
take in the ferret at times just for a few minutes now and then for hugs. The aim is to
reduce excitement.
