Subject: [ferrethealth] Re:IBD questions
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

I have a 2.5 yo male with IBD. He is on prednislone. Has she lost weight?
Weight loss is also common. This is an auto-immune disease. The Immuran is
an immune suppressant. It will not cure the problem. It does however
manage the problem. Immuran is usually reserved for those ferrets that have not
been controlled on prednislone. Because Immuran has to be monitored. It can
cause over supression of her immune system leaving her open to serious
infection and illness by reducing her white blood cell count too much.

I also have auto-immune disease myself and I personally have been on most of
the immune suppressant drugs. Auto-immune disease is when the immune
system no longer recognizes self and starts attacking self. In this case it would
be your ferrets GI tract. There is NO cure for this, however there is
treatment to control it. You want to reduce the inflammation and get the gut the
work as well as possible. Keep in mind this type of disease can go dormant
and come back. I know my disease is cyclic as in my ferrets Milo.

If seedy stools are the only thing you are seeing. I would monitor her
closely.

Not all ferrets get the same thing. They are really no different than
humans in that respect. You can have 4 people in a house and 3 get flu and one
does not.

Lipase helps in the break down of fat. If she is passing lipid balls then
she has WAY too much fat in her diet and that could be there reason for the
HIGH lipase. I would go to different kibble maybe lower fat.

Good luck
