Subject: [ferrethealth] kidney questions
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

I apologize for not being able to get to this sooner but someone asked about kidney
disease.

With acute kidney disease is is not necessary to decrease protein.

With chronic kidney disease it is important that the protein be high level protein but that
the phosphorous levels be reduced. Meats vary in their phosphorous levels but tend to be
high in that mineral. One approach that is used is to decrease the amount of protein from
meat by replacing it with egg protein which is lower in phoshorous. Another approach
that is used is simply to decrease the protein levels because doing so also decreases the
phospohorous levels.

Fish oil is very useful for ferrets with kidney disease due to the omega 3 levels. In

You referenced an article from Dr Scott Brown,
VMD, PhD, ACVIM from the University of Georgia.
He has written many on this topic. Yes, the fish oils
have the omega 3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA) that help
to reduce inflammation. In the kidneys, fish oils lower
the amount of the eicosanoids (prostaglandin E2 and
thromboxane A2), which reduces glomerular pressure
and slows the progression of chronic kidney disease.
Omega 6 fatty acids (vegetable oils) increase the production
of the eicosanoids, increase glomerular hypertension, and
speed up the progression to end-stage kidney failure (death).
That is one of the reasons Iams/Eukanuba kitten, Totally
Ferret, and Marshall's ferret food all have fish oil in them.

Be sure to provide lots of fluids as pre the guidance of your vet. With some types of
kidney disease require a great deal more than normal levels.

Food needs can be changed by health, and as hard as it is when an individual has special
needs a way has to be found to meet those. For a ferret with chronic kidney disease one
way may be to have some of the meals away from other ferrets.

(The reverse can be done, too: having only special food available to all, but having the
rest have special separate eating times with more variety.)

I hope that this helps you.
