Subject: [ferrethealth] Imuran experiences
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

My IBD ferret Ronan is not maintaining all that well on pediapred and my vets and I are debating moving him to Imuran. I'm worried about possible side effects and wonder if anyone who has used Imuran long term would be willing to share their experience with me.

He was diagnosed through biopsy with severe IBD, so we know for a fact that it's what we're dealing with. Pediapred (at the maximum dose for his weight) made a big difference for about two months, but we're seeing recurring overblooms of his gut fauna (which generally respond well to metronidazole but eventually come back) and he's grinding his teeth again. His stool is never that great at its best, much too pale even when it's the right consistency. Thankfully his appetite is more than fine (he's on limited rations since he tends to be seriously overweight if allowed to eat as much as he wants), but obviously he must be in pain if he's grinding his teeth and the recurring diarrhea can't be any fun.

Anyway, thanks in advance for any Imuran experience...

Regina
