Subject: [ferrethealth] Helicobacter and gastric ulcers...
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Hello, I apologize in advance for the length of my post.

For the past few weeks I've posted about my ferrets stomach problems
(diarrhea and such) and I think we're finally getting somewhere. The
vet had all 5 of them on chloramphenicol for 14 days, and after
little to no improvement we asked her about trying amoxicillin (I'm
beginning to wonder how well my vet knows ferrets...), so she put
them all on AmoxiDrops but told us to continue the chloramphenicol
also. This seems unnecessary to me, since it's more then likely
helicobacter. Should I keep giving the chloamphenicol anyway?

Now Spring, age 6, has stopped eating and become very skinny and
lethargic. We're force-feeding Gerber Baby Turkey (we can't find
Chicken at any grocery stores!) four to five times a day, sometimes
mixed with water to help keep him hydrated between taking him in for
Sub-Cu (which we've been doing everyday for the past 3 days). His
diarrhea is still very bad and he's so tired sometimes he can't make
it to the litter box and goes in his bed. I've heard that you can
give ferrets a very small amount of Pepto. Does this help and how
much?

Spring is on metronidazole twice daily along with his amoxicillin,
but the risk of bleeding from gastric ulcers worries me. Can someone
tell me how to know if there's blood in his stool? When he poops
it's very dark, and of course, runny, but if you wipe up with a
white tissue, it looks brown not red.

The sneezes have at least cleared up, and we're all just trying to
get through this.

Thank you for any advice,
~Emily and the carpet sharks
