Subject: [ferrethealth] Anyone have any experience with kidney failure?
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
I have a 7 year old ferret, Blossom, who was diagnosed over a year ago with kidney failure and ended up having her left removed - it was nephritis and most likely cancerous. She has in the past 4 months, been diagnosed again with her remaining kidney failing. We have her on a number of medications that seem to be helping - Omega-3 fatty acid oil, pepcid for any possible stomach issues due to vomiting, pet-tinic to help with her red cells production and sub-q fluids every day (50cc). We also mix in the KD science diet food with her regular diet to help with processing protein.
Since being on this regimen, she has gained 110g of weight and seems to be more comfortable - I haven't had any recurrance of anorexia or vomiting since beginning. Her diagnosis is she probably has 6 months to a year of quality time depending on how well she continues to do. Based on her urinalysis and blood work, the docs feel that she has about 1/4 of her remaining kidney functioning... we follow up about every 2 weeks with tests to monitor her situation....We have a final ace in the hole so to speak if her kidney function is further reduced to treat for amyloids (sp) - I don't have a hope of spelling it but it has its own dangers - it can cause her body to reject the enzyme that her kidney produces which stimulates red blood cell production, so we are saving that as a true last resort. I hope that this helps. If you email me off list, I can provide the Vets/clinic that are treating her.

My 6.5 year old male ferret has been diagnosed with severe kidney
failure. He had one adrenal gland removed 1.5 years ago. I have a
very ferret knowledgeable vet who has run numerous blood tests and his
BUN is very high.
Any advise would be welcome.
