I have dealt with two ferrets diagnosed with chronic renal failure.
Both lived another 6 or so months. My most recent, Emma, died on this
past Thanksgiving night. Renal failure requires a very strict
regimen, with sub-q fluids, close monitoring of renal values, and
corresponding medication adjustments. Both of mine also had to be
hand/syringe/force-fed during the later months of the disease, as
their appetite diminished. It is a grueling regimen but becomes
easier as you both get into the routine. I put together all the posts
on my first who had kidney failure, Champ, and they can be found in
the Files section, Old Case Files (from Smartgroups), Champ-
Renal_Failure.doc.

Emma, my more recent one, pretty much survived on a regimen of 3 hand
feedings a day, sub-q fluids once a day, and phoslo. she also did eat
some kibble on her own but I had a heck of a time keeping her weight
up. I believe she also was getting pediapred and Pet Tinic along the
way. I had her kidney values checked every few weeks. I moved her
into a separate playpen type cage (one level) since she had always
been pretty much of a loner anyway. I did let her out with the others
but she had her own space when caged.

Her values improved but then she quickly deteriorated towards the
end. Her death was very sudden and appeared to be painless.
