Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Anyone have any experience with kidney failure?
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

With kidney failure there are acute (sudden on-set and the ferret can get past it) and
chronic (persistent) types.

Limiting protein is important for the chronic types but not usually for the acute cases BUT
it also becomes important that the protein be of a high quality for each such as cooked
eggs for part of it.

Phosphorous in the diet should be reduced.

Omega 3 Fatty Acids (fish oil -- not cod liver oil; alternatively flax seed oil can be used but
be sure to store it in refrigeration) should be added, but Omega 6 Fatty acids (many
vegetable oils) should be reduced.

Getting enough fluids (and for these ferrets that can mean more than usual amounts) is
important. Ask your vet how much fluid your ferret needs each day. Sub-cu fluids at
night before you go to sleep can be useful.

The FHL Archives contain almost 6 years of past posts (from each of the three URLs we
have had over that space of time) and a number of those contain info to help you. Here
are two past vet replies to other kidney questions which have some overlap with your
needs:
