Subject: [ferrethealth] Re:front leg amputation
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Hi Liz,
Relax, amputating a front arm on a ferret is just
like amputating a front arm on a cat or dog, just
smaller and easier!. I would recommend using
bupivacaine as a local block to help control the
post-op pain, metacam or pediapred after the
surgery for 7+ days and torbugesic as needed
for the first day or 2 (again for pain control).
Ferrets adopt quite quickly to using 3 legs and within
2-4 weeks will be just us quick as a 4 legged ferret.
Hope that helps,
Jerry Murray, DVM
