Subject: [ferrethealth] Plant-based virus?
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Hi,
Does anyone know of a virus transmissible to ferrets that is plant-
based? I've heard of plant-based vaccines, but not a virus that is
actually derived from a plant.

Reason I ask is because a local man had a ferret near 7 years of age
who came down with a wasting-type illness after the lower story of his
home was flooded this past summer. He brought the ferret to Cornell U.
By the time they diagnosed the ferret they said it was too late to
save him. They told him the virus came from plants, but he can't
remember what it was or what else exactly they said.

This ferret was the last of several this man owned, and now he's
giving away several very large cages in beautiful shape with bedding,
food/water dishes, etc. Do you think it would be OK to accept these,
as long as they're properly disinfected with bleach? Any other
protocols I could/should follow?

Thanks,
Susann Thiel
