Sukie, thanks so much! The prototheca would make sense given the
terrible flooding in our area. The whole lower story of his house
was underwater, and all of the sewage treatment facilities in our
region were overwhelmed. (One of the main plants is still pouring
raw sewage into the Susquehanna.) Moreover, his area is primarily
farmland, and the flooding deposited those chemicals into the mix -
promoting algae growth.

I have to think if it was something like ADV or even DIM, Cornell
wouldn't have any trouble identifying it. OTOH he was very definite
in stating that it was a virus. The ferret was insulinomic but began
to go seriously downhill after the flood, wasting was the primary
symptom (no diahrrea), and the diagnosis was made too late to save
the ferret.

All kinds of nasties are deposited by floods - and we really know so
little about the effects of prolonged exposure to humans and
animals. My left shoulder (the side I usually lie on) still itches,
some 15 months after sleeping on the ground in New Orleans...

Thank you again for your research, and for contacting Dr. Kiupel. If
I find out anything more, I'll let you know!

Susann
