Subject: [ferrethealth] Vaccine: Canvac
To: <ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com>

Hi,

I'd like to ask for opinions of other people in Europe about a vaccination
against canine distemper called "Canvac".

As far as I know it is a registered vaccination against CD in ferrets in
some European Countries. This is how it became registered in Hungary, too
(the registration process is easier when the vaccination is already
registered in some EU countries). This is the only registered CD vaccination
in ferrets in Hungary right now. The registration procedure did a testing on
3(!) ferrets and found no probems with it.

The experience shows that if this vaccination is given to young ferrets with
no prior vaccination, it causes similar symptoms to canine distemper and
kills the animal (the symptoms appear in three weeks after the vaccination).
This effect (I suppose) didn't come out when testing because it was made on
only three animals. I don't know where else is it registered (In Slovakia
the registration was withdrawn after two years of fight betwen the producer
and the local club), but I'd like to know if anyone else uses this type of
vaccination and if there were any bad effects. I also don't know how a
vaccination could pass the tests if it causes these effects. Please be very
careful when using this vaccination until more information is available.
