Subject: [ferrethealth] Thrombosis research
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

As folks here know from reading Dr. Bruce Williams, ferret veterinary pathology expert,
ferrets don't get true strokes but they DO throw clots (thromboses). In ferrets these are often
secondary to cardiomyopathy, but also occur with kidney disease, lymphoma, etc. They are
hard as heck to prevent once they start happening because too many ferrets bleed too freely
with the meds.

Here is a new (non-ferret) study into what allows thromboses to form in the first place and
EPCR antibodies, a substance that protects the blood vessels against obstruction by a
thrombus:

which hopefully will lead to more understanding and better approaches.
