Subject: [ferrethealth] Dilated cardiomyopathy in ferret w/renal disease
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

I have a 7 yo ferret with 1 kidney - left was removed 1+ years ago - the
right is failing based on urine/blood tests - her last test was today - BUN
dropped from a high of 81 to 54; Red count has increased from 12 to 22 (on
medications since 12/20/06 - 50cc of subq fluids daily, 0.1 furosemide 1x day,
omega fatty acid 0.25 1x day, pet tinic 0.2 2x day, enalapril 1/4 tab of 1mg
tablet 1x day, diet is a mix of Feline NF with normal ferret foods).

Xrays taken today show that the heart is enlarged and exhibits some
arrythmia - fast beat, then slow then fast again. Vet wants to increase her enalapril
but is concerned about increasing the dosage - is there a known good
treatment for twice daily? We did a search on VIN without success....Ferret weighs
617g. Ferret is also exhibiting recurrance of adrenal disease but treating
with lupron versus surgery because of the kidney.

Also - there is a new heart medication - that is for treatment in dogs -
starts with a "p" like petobomide??..any ideas on availability and whether this
may be worth adding to the mix? I will say that the ferret is in good spirits
- curious and eating pretty well.

Any suggestions are appreciated...
