Subject: [ferrethealth] Help requested
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
This owner has given me permission to seek help for her ferret on
this list. It was referred to our veterinary practice for a
surgical consult. Once the information was forwarded, it did not
appear to be a surgical problem and I think they have followed a few
incorrect paths. I will try to be as brief as possible, some of the
text is directly from the owner. Snickers is a soon to be 5 yr. old
ferret.
=84X May 2003: (age one) He becomes lethargic, thin, dehydrated,
not eating. Several dx considered; none ruled in definitively.=20
Treated with antibiotics and prednisone. One surgery after a barium
study suggests an obstruction (none found). Snickers eats kibble
soup for four months. Acts ok but not quite well after the initial
illness. It=A1=A6s suggested he be switched to a hypo-allergenic food
(fed at first as soup). He appears fully recovered in August 2003.=20
He is fine until=A1K.
=84X February and March 2004: Develops what is dx at first as a
urinary tract infection and is treated with antibiotics and cathed.=20
Later turns out to have 25+ bladder stones, possibly secondary to
the hypo-allergenic food (he now eats Totally Ferret). One surgery
to remove the stones is not entirely successful. Second surgery to
construct new, shorter urethral opening is successful. He=A1=A6s then on
antibiotics to get rid of the last of the infection until May 2004.
Snickers fell on the stairs 3/30/06 ( per owner it was only 3 stairs
and she is not sure why.). Acute onset of Schiff-Sherrington so
went to neuro center for an MRI which was negative. Ataxia
continues, but Snickers is stable and slightly improved. He
intermittently hyperextends his neck. Hairloss inspired blood panel
to Tennessee. Had adrenal surgery 11/1/06. Adenal gland was not
biopsied even though owner inquired about it.=20
Bloodwork from May 06 showed
TP 6.9 Normals 4.3-6.0
Globulin 3.0 0.2-2.4
Calcium 10.0 7.6-7.5
all else WNL
Bloodwork from 10/06:
TP 7.2 same normals
Globulin 3.3
Glucose 114 Normal 120-144
Lymphocytes 49% 22-48%
With the elevated TP and Globulin I suggested they run an ADV test.=20
I believe they ran the Avecon POCT test which was negative.=20
Any other suggestions? I forwarded them the info from here for
ferret wheels for Snickers which they are thrilled about, but any
other ideas? I have ALOT more info that the owner passed onto me as
well.
Thanks, Susan Holland
