Subject: [ferrethealth] Dry/Cracking Paw Pads and Persistent Eye Infection
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Hello all,

I searched the archives and found advice on how to moisturize
dry/cracking paw pads with Vitamin E, but I thought I remembered
reading somwhere that dry/cracking paw pads might be a sign of
something else. My Kiba has both dry/cracking paw pads (2 weeks)
and a persistent eye infection (20 months). My other 2 boys, who
live in a different room, have perfectly pink paw pads and bright,
shiny, dischargeless eyes. My vet (not a ferret expert) gave us
some cream to put right on Kiba's eye and that would make the
discharge stop for a little bit, but when we ran out, the discharge
came back. I pointed out to my vet that that might indicate an
underlying problem, but she chalked it off to allergies. When his
eye is open, I can see a film on it, and when he closes it/blinks,
the discharge comes out. I think it's clear, but he is a DEW and
his eye now has a yellowish ring around it, which comes off when
scrubbed (which he naturally hates). Kiba came to us with this
problem, when he was about 6 months old, and we have moved since he
came to us, so the infection has persisted in a completely different
enviornment. Maybe I'm being paranoid about lumping the dry/cracked
paw pads and the eye infection together, but I'm at a loss and my
vet isn't doing anything about it. Any ideas?

Thank you in advance!
