Subject: Re: [ferrethealth] Dilated cardiomyopathy in ferret w/renal disease
To: <ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com>
Hi Lisa
I have a ferret, Gremlin, 7 1/2 years old, with cardiomyopathy, she was on
Enalapril for just over a year when a blood test last August showed that she
had gone into renal failure. My vet and I switched her heart medication to
Benazepril. Partly because Benazepril "is the only ACE inhibitor
specifically licensed for the management of chronic renal insufficiency
(CRI) in cats" ( from web site
http://www.felinegood.co.uk/treatments/en/fortekor.shtml ). I don't know if
it applies to ferrets but it seemed that Benazepril was the better option
for a ferret with cardiomyopathy and chronic renal failure. We also started
her on 2 supplements (Epakitin and Kaminox) for renal failure. Gremlin
improved on the medication, has a very good appetite and is stable so far.
I think the name of the new medication you were looking for is Pimobendan.
Good luck with your ferret.
Ulrike
