Subject: [ferrethealth] Oral melatonin 10 - 11 hours after sunup
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

This weekend, a geriatric female ferret (age unknown) was brought into the =
animal shelter
where I volunteer in extremely poor shape. She was dehydrated and shows sig=
ns of adrenal
disease =96 hair loss, itchy skin, swollan vulva. I brought her home until =
the shelter can make
arrangements for the ferret rescue group to pick her up. (Ferrets are illeg=
al in the 5 boroughs
of NYC, so the ferrets that arrive at the shelter go to rescue groups elsew=
here.) As I don't
know how long I will have her (days? weeks?) I'd like to start her on oral =
melatonin to relieve
some of her symptoms. Problem is, I don't get home until 6:30 pm. Would fee=
ding her the
melatonin that late in the day be of any help to her? Would it harm her? I =
would take her in to
the vet, but I have four ferrets of my own that need to be taken care of an=
d it would cost at
least $300 for the initial visit, blood work and the implant. (All expenses=
are out of my
pocket.) Any suggestions?
