Subject: [ferrethealth] Do ferrets get high blood pressure or low blood pressure?
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
There is a specific adrenal ?medullar tumor called pheochromocytoma that does produce high blood pressure, among other symptoms, in humans. This is not the type that ferrets get. They usually get an adrenal cortex tumor that overproduces the sex hormones. There are a few adrenal tumors that may overproduce the cortisol as well, but this is not so common in ferrets. Mostly our ferrets get tumors that by overproducing the sex hormones cause the fur loss, the aggression, mating behavior, swollen vulva and so on. This won't affect their blood pressure.
ferrets with addison's from bilateral adrenal removal can get problems regulating their blood pressures (going too low) if the addison's is not treated.
I am not a vet, but the above is my understanding of the disease our ferrets get.
