Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Do ferrets get high blood pressure or low blood pressure?
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Hi Eleanor,
>From your description it sounds like you have
a pheochromocytoma. Pheochromocytomas
are adrenal tumors of the adrenal medulla, and they
overproduce norepinephrine and epinephrine. This will
cause high blood pressure. Pheochromocytomas are rare
in ferrets (and rare in dogs and cats). They will cause high
blood pressure in animals also. I had 1 case in a ferret back
in 1992.
Of course ferrets normally have tumors of the adrenal cortex that
overproduce the sex hormones and androgens. This does not
usually change the blood pressure, but in some cases, with a high
estrogen level, ferrets can develop anemia.
Hope that helps,
Jerry Murray, DVM
