Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Dilated cardiomyopathy in ferret w/renal disease
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Hello Lisa,
Looks like you are asking 2 questions.
One about the heart medications, and the
second about kidney medications.
The heart medication you are referring to is
Pimobendan (Vetmedin). Yes, it is a good medication
to use for ferrets with dilated cardiomyopathy.
It is not yet approved here in the US, but it can be order
from England where it is made or from Canada where it
is already approved. A lot of the vet schools have it also.
Pimobendan is a much safer option than digoxin. The
suggested dose is 0.2 mg to 0.3 mg per kg 2 times a day.
There is a good article on Pimobendan in the Oct 2006 issue
of Veterinary Medicine (p660-668).
The second suggestion would be to use benazepril instead
of enalapril (Enacard). The dosage for benazepril is the same
as enalapril 0.25 mg to 0.5 mg per kg once a day. Benazepril
is a little safer for the kidneys than enalapril.
Now for the kidney part. I would suggest adding Epakitin to
the food to help lower the BUN, and to use Epogen (or Procrit)
to treat her anemia.
Hope that helps,
Jerry Murray, DVM
PS Lisa how is your leg doing?
