Subject: [ferrethealth] HELP!!! Re: Need Vet input Propecia/Lupron
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Thank You for very much for your reply Dr Murray. I appreciate your
taking the time to answer. Now I am in a bit of a bind- you may not
want to discuss this and I will understand if you dont.....

WAS having a bit of trouble finding a vet who will follow this
treatment plan. As as of 4:00 PM Friday afteroon I now have two
vets.

Vet #1 Went to this Vet today for a consult. Has done extensive work
with ferrets. Highly recommended on our States web group. Is on many
websites under finding a ferret vet near you. Very successful with
cyrosurgery. Says we may explore that avenue later on. Says my 7 yo
is in very good conditon for what he has been through. Discussed
marsupulation of prostatic cyst.
BUT HE WANTS TO PUT HIM ON CASODEX AND DROP THE LUPRON. SAYS
CASODEX WORKS FASTER THAN PROPECIA- SHOULD SEE RESULTS IN TWO TO
FOUR WEEKS. LUKEWARM ON MELATONIN. I don't know the dose of the
Casodex as it is being compounded at the pharmacy won't be ready
until Saturday (today) afternoon. He also said to not use much of
the pain med- could mask a new issue and we won't catch it.

Vet #2 Has been our vet since adrenal surgery in 2005. Will not
attempt removal of right adrenal (yes that is the one that has to go-
yes it is malignant). He has mentioned having to refer me to
someone eventually (on two occasions) but when I asked him who he
wants me to see he says he really does not know anyone. He took the
ultrasound last Thursday and measured the prostate - 3 cm by 1 cm- I
was in the ultrasound room and watched him measure it twice- he was
trying to show it to me.
Don't know how confident he is about doing work on prostatic cysts.
BUT OUT OF DESPERATION I LEFT HIM A VOICE MAIL (before I got a same
day appointment with the consult vet) ASKED HIM IF HE WOULD CONSIDER
RAISING THE MONTHLY LUPRON DOSE HIGHER THAN THE 240 MCG MONTHLY AS
WE DO NOW AND IF HE WOULD CONSIDER ADDING PROPRECIA OR A SIMLAR
DRUG. Well much to my surprise when I got home from seeing Vet #1 HE
HAS LEFT ME A VOICE MAIL SAYING HE WILL RAISE THE LUPRON TO 400 MCG
AND WILL DO PROPECIA- WOULD LIKE TO HAVE THIS EVENING TO DO A BIT
MORE RESEARCH ON THE PROPECIA LIKE DRUGS. He also is lukewarm on
melatonin. Says Luke is miserable and in pain- he does whine and
cry alot with urination and defecation.

I never really thought Vet#2 would raise Lupon and add Propecia- but
I asked him anyways. I never dreamed he would say yes.

NOW WHAT AM I TO DO - stick with with the vet who at this time will
follow the protocol but may not be quite up to doing surgical
procedures on the prostate and was up front about no right adrenal
removal- may not be able to handle the situation if things get more
complicated
OR
do I go to the Consult Vet (Vet 2) who has proven to be a successful
ferret vet- does all types of surgery. Is good to show the pro and
con of any treatment plan. Takes time to really explain in detail
case scenarios (but I took in so much information that I do not
remember why he wants to stop the Lupron- WILL CALL HIS OFFICE
TOMORROW FOR CLARIFICATION). If he says Lupron is out for now and
just casodex DO I JUST WALK AWAY?

Both Vets are near the same age.

Is anyone willing to put their two cents in on this situation???

I NEED to make the right decision for my little guy- DON'T THINK I
AM NOT SCARED TO MAKE THE WRONG CHOICE - I AM VERY SCARED.
