To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Ulcers and GI illnesses or conditions are certainly among the things that can cause
grinding and the nausea it tends to signal.

I think that it was bright of you to try soft food and to check the teeth and gums. That
helps reduce the risk that the teeth may be involved.

Other things can also cause nausea, for example, insulinoma can.

I would be leery to try Mylanta. There are several reasons: First of all, I simply do NOT
know if it is safe for ferrets. Many over the counter medications are not.
Okay, looking at
<http://www.rxmed.com/b.main/b2.pharmaceutical/b2.1.monographs/CPS-%
20Monographs/CPS-%20(General%20Monographs-%20M)/MYLANTA.html>
I see that even for humans Mylanta should not be used if there is any possibility of an
obstruction.

I notice, too that it contains Aluminum Hydroxide and Magnesium Hydroxide. If I recall
right, the first should not be given to ferrets, but as usual this should be looked up. Okay,
here is the aluminum caution:
http://ferrethealth.org/archive/SG15527
and it looks like there may be more.

You will need to judge how severe this seems to you and decide whether you should go to
an emergency vet, call your vet and leave a message asking for call-back, or get to the vet.

Your vet may be willing to call in a prescription for the liquid formulation of Carafate many
pharmacies carry unless your ferret has kidney problems.

Some have used the syrup from canned peaches to reduce nausea, a trick originally from
Troy Lynn. We have not tried that, but unless there is diabetes it should be safe as a stop-
gap.

Watch for worrisome signs such as vomiting, coughing, black or dark green feces, etc.
and if such things appear jump higher, faster.

I am sure that others here will have more info for you.
