Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Teeth "grinding" ?
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Teeth grinding could be caused by a few things, but in all cases is
a sign of pain, and is most likely a result of ulcers. Having
fought ulcers for the last 4 months in our beloved Neo, and having
won the battle, I can tell you what worked for us.
He was first on 6 weeks of amoxicillin. Along with that he
received Carafate (same as Sucralfate) 20-30 minutes before each
meal. This coats the ulcers. He also was given pepcid (famotidine).
For this we got basic Pepcid AC tablets, 10 mg strength. I would
take two tablets, dissolve them in 8.0 ml of distilled water, and
use this as his pepcid formula. He was given 0.4 ml of this formula
twice a day. The amoxicillin was stopped after 6 weeks, but the
carafate and pepcid continued on for 4 months, and it has been a
long time since Neo showed any signs of grinding or stomach upset.
He put back on all of the weight he lost within a few weeks while we
fed him a soup mixture that was smooth and easier on his stomach
than kibble. One other trick you can try with kibble is to grind it
up into much smaller pieces in a food processor, making it easier to
chew and digest.

Good luck. Diligence is necessary in dealing with ulcers, as they
take a long time to heal, but they ARE able to be cured.

grinding in a ferret, a particular symptom of an ulcer or some
stomach/intestinal problem? My 5 yr. old male, who has good
teeth/gums, and doing very well up until this week, suddenly started
acting like he didn't feel well, and I noticed was eating less of
his dry food. He acted like he was having trouble chewing, but does
this teeth grinding. I've been giving him a sort of "duck soup"
mixture, by hand, and he'll take some by himself, but then
afterwards, he does the teeth grinding. I have some vanilla
pediatric type Mylanta on hand; should I try Rocket on a little of
this, or ??? I do have a vet appt. for my guy on Tuesday morning,
but thought I could get some feedback here, to take with me to the
vet. Thanks!
