Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: insulinoma and ulcers/ Really need some info from a vet
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

I have fought ulcers and insulinoma for the last 4 months in our
ferret Neo. It has been very difficult, but in that time we did get
the ulcers to heal and disappear. I just posted another message on
that subject, so I will not repeat all of the ulcer information
here.

You CAN treat both ulcers and insulinoma together, but it takes
diligence to feed and medicate your ferret at regular intervals
throughout the day, which in the case of Neo meant either 5 of 6
times a day, with a special soup that I created. I tried to stagger
the meds for ulcers and the meds for the insulinoma at different
feedings. Carafate can impede the absorption of meds, so I usually
did not give Neo Carafate before the feedings that included his
insulinoma meds, but I was sure to give him Carafate 20-30 minutes
before meals at least 3 times a day. We won the battle with the
ulcers, but we have lost the battle with the insulinoma after 4 more
months in what has been a more aggressive case than any I have ever
read or heard about. Neo's insulinoma was extremely aggressive and
has finally gotten so bad that we must let him go tomorrow,
peacefully, at the vet's. My point is that the diligence that we
used in treating him did work for both ulcers and insulinoma, at
least for a while, and if it worked for his severe case, then it can
work for most others.
