Hey Emily;

I wanted to mention that just as human infants and children can have heart problems so can young ferrets (and other species). While your little guy's problem is most likely an allergy, do not rule out cardio without your vet first ruling it out and with exam - not opinion.

Yes ferret's can have allergies, yes common dust or fumes off-gassing from carpets can make a ferret sneeze and cough,

asthma.. hmmm - I don't have a memory of a ferret diagnosed with asthma,

but respiratory infections can linger or reoccur; new ones can develop.

Brandon moved from Canton, Michigan to Pasadena, TX when he was a year old. He coughed and sneezed for at least 6 months, maybe longer and I just don't remember the time frame. He was not sick, he had a wonderful appetite and attitude, he just had to stop and sneeze or cough from time to time.

He did have his front incisiors pulled at 3 years, a molar at 6 years and now at 7 years old he is still investigating, sometimes dancing - the dance is just no longer the jitterbug, now it's more of a foxtrot and he still has a good appetite.

My point about his dentals - often with humans and I would suppose also with ferrets - the sinuses and tooth roots (and inner ear parts) are all quite close together. Bad teeth can contribute to bad sinuses (and vice versa) -- and sinus drainage can contribute to coughing.

Don't rule IT out.. make the doctor rule IT out.. they went to school FOREVER to gather as much info as they can about our beloved furkids... let them practice... one day it may save a few lives... ;-)

I've read cardiomyopathy can cause coughing because of backed up fluid in the chest, but I know Linus is much too young to be having that.

Can ferrets have asthma or allergies, and if so, would it cause
coughing? What can I do to help him?

Thank you,
