Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: giving metronidazole--Please Help
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
WHY is metronidizole being used? For some health problems there are easier to give
alternative medical approaches.
In reply to one answer you got I'd like to just send this reminder for people who are new to
sick ferrets: with patience and use of the ferret's own behavior very few ferrets need to be
force-fed. Put a towel on your lap, warm the food so that the ferret can smell it, if the
ferret resists rub some on the ferret's lips, offer it by finger while speaking gently or
singing to the ferret. Many like to hear plucked string instruments which soothe them.
Another technique is to have a large dropper like the "Clown Spoon Droppers" (best design
I have found for ferret needs) and to cuddle the ferret (putting a bowl beneath, or standing
over a sink if the ferret is taking most of it already) and dribble the watered down and
warmed food in front of the ferret's face letting the ferret take it at will.
There are a number of techniques shy of force-feeding which work the majority of the
time. Many of them are in the FHL Archives which have an address separate from the FHL,
allowing people to easily search among and use 6 years of past posts. (See my signature
lines.)
Otherwise, learn at the vet hospital you use how to force-feed safely. Your little one does
not need aspiration pneumonia, esp. not now.
