Many of us don't have the luxury of a lot of time to feed sick
animals. I, for one, often have to run home on my lunch hour to
feed or medicate a sick ferret. Syringe feeding is the easiest and
most efficient way to feed. I agree that we need to learn the right
way to do it, but I don't think it's as dangerous as you often say.
Anything can be dangerous if done incorrectly, but once taught, it's
really not that difficult.
I don't call my syringe feeding "force feeding" in most cases. It's
just easier and quicker. There are times when the ferret just
doesn't want to eat, and I guess then it is forced. When Emma was
ill, I would let her eat from a little bowl in my lap in the
mornings and evenings, but I would syringe feed her at noontime for
my convenience. And, if she wasn't eating enough from the bowls,
she would start getting syringe fed every meal.
Please don't scare people about syringe feeding. At times, it has
to be done and my belief is that if you "think" something bad might
happen, it is more likely to happen. Sometimes, we just have to
grit our teeth and take the plunge.
