Subject: [ferrethealth] Ugg -Force feeding and ferretone
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Years ago I was taught to force feed a ferret who was not eating kibble on his own by wrapping that ferret in a towel so he could not move, but I soon learned that holding him and offering soup from my finger or a spoon was all the force that is needed.

I forced a sick little girl once; she did not aspirate the soup, I was taught well and very patient. But, she knew it was time for her to go when I did not. Forcing her only made her miserable and later left me with a sense of guilt about syringing food into her mouth. I swore then that I would never again force an animal to eat and I won't. I will assist feed 'till the cows come home, I will create any and every concoction that I can think of to tempt her to eat, I will even give something that I would never put in a daily diet, but forcing is not, in my opinion, the right thing to do. We each have to make our own choices of what is right.

The other thing I keep seeing and wonder about is the giving of meds with ferretone or other oil. If I'm wrong please correct me - doesn't ferretone limit the absorption of the medication? Just wondering....

Vicki

There are a number of techniques shy of force-feeding which work the majority of the time.

Otherwise, learn at the vet hospital you use how to force-feed safely. Your little one does
not need aspiration pneumonia, esp. not now.
