Subject: [ferrethealth] Female kit - Tilted head since birth (common through litter)
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
Hello Everyone,
I wish to gain some advice regarding possible condition and treatment
for one of my kits whose head tilts to the right, and has since birth.
Background
-------------------
Recently I picked up two gorgeous sable female kits (born
Halloween). A number of kits were euthanaised
due to excessive head-tilting after birth. In one case, one kit would
only walk backwards and had an almost 180 degree head tilt.
On consultation with ferret specialists, it was suggested to the
breeder that the mother may have had a viral infection during
pregnancy, though this is uncertain.
Of the two kits I have, one seems completely healthy (Jazz).
The other kit, Eboni, has varying head tilt each day.
Eboni
-------------------
Eboni is a very happy little ferret, she is full of energy, loves
play, food, and getting general attention. She is able to eat and
drink with no problems, and still manages to "kick her sister's butt"
during playtime.
Eboni's tead tilts to the right, at varying degrees on different days.
Today, it was much more pronounced at times reaching almost 90
degrees from normal. This left her 'corkscrewing' a few times, though
this stopped after a few minutes.
Eboni does tend to use her 'roll' more than her sister, and is still
quite happy today.
Does anyone have any suggestions as what may be the problem, and how
it may be dealt with?
My initial thoughts are that it may be neurological, or perhaps to do
with the inner ear. I wish to do whatever I can to relieve her
condition and give her the long and happy life she deserves.
===================
Some may ask why I would knowingly take a kit with such an issue.
Last year I lost my best friend of two years, Mojo to cancer. My bond
with Mojo was something words cannot do justice, but he cultivated a
true love of all things ferret.
Eboni, however long she may be with me, will be given a happy life
with her biological sister, plus her two new sisters: Josie and
Isabel. She is loved as much as any other, and will always be given a
life she may not otherwise have had the opportunity to have.
Thank you for your time.
~Brett
