Hi S;

Everyone is right. The lump you mentioned could be a cyst, tumor or well who knows. Short of cash or not you need to have it looked at, maybe aspirated to determine what it is. Also did the people who gave the ferrets to you know what it was? Who told them to leave it alone and why?

The caging issue can be solved fairly easily. If you'll put hammocks staggered each one a bit higher than the previous they can use those to climb up in the cage and if they fall from one hammock the lower hammocks should be positioned so that they would only fall into the next lower one. The hammocks should be fairly large so that if a ferret should fall the lower hammocks cover enough area to catch him/her.

If you can not buy them.. and there are many people selling ferret bedding at reasonable prices - I can give you a couple of address if you need them - and none of these sellers are me and none support my rescue so there is no conflict of interest here --- anyway..

if you can not buy some nice big hammocks that your ferrets can crawl into (complete darkness and not lying/sleeping in the light is thought to be best for your ferret's health) you can use towels or old clothes like blue jeans and sweat shirts to make hammocks... It is best if you make sure all outside edges are sewn or glued together so no one rolls over and falls out one end. Leave or make an opening in the center of the top layer through which they can crawl to get inside their "cave".

To hang them go to WalMart and get shower curtain hangers. Not the circular kind but the pear shaped wire kind. Use these at each corner to suspend the material.

Let us know what you find out about the lump - I'm sure we are all interested in the diagnosis.

Vicki
