Two possibilities are that these ferrets may have influenza
or have bacterial sinus infections. Both are seen in ferrets
as reverse zoonotics (caught from people) and could have
been caught at the farm, at a distribution location, in transit,
or at the pet store from employees or from customers.

Certainly a vet (Dr. Sandra Kudrak Mitchell, who has tracked
arriving pet store ferrets (and provided the data to APHIS of
the USDA when the effort was made to improve ferret regulations)
has pointed out a larger number of infections in younger ferrets.
Thanks to the work of Dr. Mitchell, the IFC, the AFA, Linda Iroff,
Dr Freddie Ann Hoffman, many other people I should name by
name but lack the space to do so, a number of ferret developmental
studies, and many, many ferret people there IS am impending
change to have a minimum actual age of 8 weeks NATIONALLY for
ferret sales and transport. It looks like that MIGHT begin this year.
See:

Plus, thanks to at least two FHL members APHIS has photos of kit
teeth so that they can more reliably age kits than paperwork tends
to do. (See the in album section:
http://pets.ph.groups.yahoo.com/group/ferrethealth/photos/browse/242e
and I know that state people have also used those in some states
which have their own minimum ages for sale and transport.
