Subject: [ferrethealth] Re:Eyes turning red

This is such a useful site and mailinglist. I managed to safe one of my
rescueferrets two days ago by rubbing a bit of honey on its gums when it
passed out. I luckily had just read that on the site of ferrethealth. And
now I see a topic that is also of interest. I have two rescueferrets at home
of a certain age; the female is 7.5 years old the male 5,5. Both of them
have red eyes, especially with artificial lightning. I have difficulties
understanding if they can see well or not. The other day my companion swung
a teatowel in front of her and she did seem to follow it moving her head.
But sometimes when she walks around I have the idea that she sees things at
the last moment and I wonder if it's not her whiskers that tell her of the
obstacle. The other male ferret is a Dark eyed white and I wonder if he's
deaf. He sometimes startles very much when I pick him up although I called
his name before. He also doesn't react at all at the peeping sound of a
rubber toy, something that ferrets normally seem to find fascinating. Does
anyone have a good test to see if he's deaf?
Tanti saluti, Anja de Vries
